Issac, The Collective Unconcious and The Shadows
Deaton in 1×03 ‘Pack Mentality’ told the Sheriff about the primal drive which in short is the drive for survival (of the species).
Deaton: Wolves are highly migratory; they could have wandered in from another state driven by impulse or strong enough memory.
Scott: Wolves have memories?
Deaton: Longer term memories, yes, if associated with a primal drive.
So how long term are we talking about?
Well in 3×01 ‘Tattoo’ (yeah I know I am jumping massively ahead) Scott was reading Jack London’s book Call of the Wild and it might just provide the answer.
This quote is from the book:
“And not only did he learn by experience, but instincts long dead became alive again. The domesticated generations fell from him. In vague ways he remembered back to the youth of the breed, to the time the wild dogs ranged in packs through the primeval forest and killed their meat as they ran it down. . . . Thus, as token of what a puppet thing life is the ancient song surged through him and he came into his own again. . . .”
The central theme of the novel is about atavistic development; the way that primitive instincts and urges persist beneath the surface. That the ‘ancient song’ is only waiting for the right time to emerge.
Memory is the process in which information is encoded, stored, and retrieved. Encoding allows information that is from the outside world to reach our senses in the forms of chemical and physical stimuli. Now werewolves seem to have more than the usual number of sense in that they can feel others emotions like Scott in 1×08 ‘Lunatic’ when he could “feel all the emotions in the room” and in 2×02 ‘Shape-shifted’ Derek told Scott that what happened to Isaac in his basement was “enough to leave an impression”. What if they don’t only receive information from the outside world what about a shared inner world i.e. the collective unconscious?
The idea of the collective unconscious fits with this theme of a primal memory in wolves:
In addition to our immediate consciousness there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually but is inherited.
Why am I rambling about memory!? Well because in 3×02 ‘Chaos Rising’ when Deaton put Isaac into a trance so that he could recall what he’d forgotten and some interesting (and creepy) things were said. Lets take another look at the conversation in that scene in more detail shall we?
Deaton: You will be half transformed – it will let us access your subconscious mind.
What if a werewolves subconscious/unconscious mind is an actual place? The Otherworld perhaps? We know that there are psychic bonds between werewolves so in a way we already know they have a collective consciousness so a collective unconscious is not to much of a stretch.
Deaton: I want to ask you about the night you found Erica and Boyd. I want you to remember it for me in as vivid detail as possible like you’re actually there again.
The ambiguity of what Deaton is saying is like aksdjhgkdjfhdh. Remember the night that Isaac found Erica and Boyd he did technically die because his heart was restarted by the Mysterious Girl in 1×01 ‘Tattoo’. So I think while Isaac was remembering what happened at the bank I think he was also remembering what happened when he was dead!
Isaac: I don’t want to do that! I don’t want to do that!
I feel you Isaac I wouldn’t want to remember being dead either.
Isaac: Some-ones here; some-ones here. No no they see me; they see me!
Yeah this thing AHHHH. [source]
There is this idea in folklore that once you notice a spirit, demon etc it notices you.
Deaton: They’re just memories; you can’t be hurt by your memory.
Said who??? You told him to remember it like he was actually there again!!! So what’s the betting you can be hurt by a memory? Harry Potter and Tom Riddle anyone?
Deaton: Now tell us what you see, tell us everything.
That freaking ambiguity again. Deaton this is sloppy work I am very unimpressed. I think Isaac tells half what he sees when he was in the bank and half from when he was dead because he was told to tell everything that he sees. Never tell a person to tell you everything that’s asking for trouble.
Deaton: We need to find them right now. Can you see them?
OMFG Deaton why don’t you use Erica and Boyd’s name I don’t want Isaac finding the thems.
Isaac: They’re here, they’re here. No, they’re here, they seen me, they’ve found me. They’re here.
Yeah I am really quite sure he’s not talking about Erica and Boyd here. There was something in the room then with them. The thing that was reflected in the light. Thems…
Isaac: No I can’t see them it’s to dark. I can’t see.
He is clearly not talking about the bank vault at this point because it wasn’t to dark there. So where was he remembering that was to dark to see them?? And just before he comes out of the trance there is a hidden frame. [source]
So what or who was Isaac seeing? I have a theory – I think in short they were Shadows. To understand what I mean by this we must return to the idea of the collective unconscious. Within the collective unconscious there archaic images or patterns that are called archetypes and are the psychic counterpart of instinct and common to everyone.
One of these archetypes is the Shadow which may be (1) the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious, or (2) an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego does not recognize in itself. The Shadow also often refers to all that lies outside the light of consciousness, and may be positive or negative and it may be (in part) one’s link to more primitive animal instincts. Intriguing for a werewolf right?
Also Shadows only exist in the light, they can’t take form in the dark and when the lights went out Isaac couldn’t see them. Interesting?
I am positive that there is another world, dimension, place, limbo, afterlife …honestly I don’t know what to call it or what it will be called. We may even be talking about a middle world that is in fact the place between other planes of existence but I definitely think it exists. In parapsychology there is something called the psychic ether which is a co-existing dimension of reality consisting of images and memories created by the mind and capable of being perceive by certain people
Lydia as hallucinations.
In 1×11 ‘Formality’ Deaton said to Scott “welcome back to the land of the living”. AHAHAHAAAAA.
