How many people really died in the Hale house fire?
So after a number of times watching and re-watching the series we noticed that there were a few discrepancies relating to the Hale fire. Now obviously these could just be accidentally discrepancies and not actually important but on the off chance it was done on purpose we are making a record of it and discussing it. (Also sometimes it’s the discrepancies that become a part of the shows mythology *eyebrow wiggle*).
At the end of 1×04 ‘Magic Bullet’ Derek takes Scott to the hospital to visit his Uncle Peter who was horrifically burnt in the fire and is now (hehe) confined to a wheelchair and basically a zombie – he doesn’t do anything he just sits and stares at walls (hehe).
Derek says to Scott:
“6 years ago my sister and I were at school, our house caught on fire, 11 people were trapped inside. He was the only survivor.”
In 1×05 ‘The Tell‘ we see Stiles reading the Official Coroner’s Report on the Hale fire. You can see the following on the page:

Now according to Derek if 11 people were trapped inside and Peter was the only survivor then that means there would have been 10 people deceased and not 8. What does it mean??
Well either it’s just a mistake or it means that two Hales are unaccounted for and apparently Derek doesn’t realise that there were more survivors than he believed! Intriguing, right?
Support for it being intentional is that Stiles looking at the Coroner’s Report occurred in the episode directly after the number that died in the fire was first mentioned; it is not like it was many episodes or seasons later where a continuity error is more likely. Plus, Jeff Davis has said that there are clues hidden in the first two seasons that hint at things to come.
In addition in 1×06 ‘Heart Monitor’ when Derek goes back to talk to his Uncle Peter about the goings on in Beacon Hills and the mysterious Alpha that is killing people he says to him:
“If you know something just give me a sign. Is it one of us? Did someone else make it out of the fire?”
If I was to hazard a guess, I would say yes, yes it does. Even though the Alpha was actually Peter it doesn’t mean that other Hale’s didn’t also survive, especially after three episodes in a row hinting at this.

Well, we know that Peter and Cora made it out for sure, but it’s possible that the third unaccounted was, in fact, Talia. The only thing left of her was the claws, so they wouldn’t have found her body and not been able to declare her dead yet, just missing. After all, no one but Derek and Laura (at the time) would have been able to identify the claws as hers; the authorities would have assumed that some kind of animal had died in the fire, if they found the claws at all. What interests me the most is why they only found five of her claws.
HELL YEAH SHE RIPPED THEM OFF ONE OF HER HANDS HERSELF AND IS IN FACT STILL ALIVE. I think I came to this conclusion too at some point I should really update this post. If Talia is still alive what is going on? I’ve considered the idea that the person Kate said she never thought she would trust could actually be Talia…..
Or she clawed her way out and in doing so lost five of her claws.
Either way total, Talia is a total BAMF!
I think along side Peter and Cora could have bean like a cousin who thought its safer he/she left, like they can come back after season 4 and be sucked into the teen’s problems. And be close to both Peter who could also be he/she’s uncle and Derek, I’d like that. :)
Talia did not make it out of the fire she died that is how Laura Talia’s oldest daughter became the alpha so if you are going to write something like this how about you get your facts straight ok and Peter survived because he is a werewolf and if you could see from when they did a flashback to when the hale house was on fire he was on the opposite side of the flames he was closer to the underground exit and the other hales were near the window and the flame was closes to them so the eight people never made it out alive
Laura was always going to be an Alpha whether or not her mother was dead or alive. Derek always claims that he would never have been an Alpha and that it was always going to be Laura. Most likely Talia would have been training Laura for when she became an Alpha of her own pack.
We knew from the beginning that Derek and Laura weren’t there and that Peter survived, but we later found out that Cora survived too from season 3, so all of Talia’s kids survived (apart from Peter killing Laura) and her brother, Peter too. Maybe the report was counting Derek and Laura too, even though they weren’t actually there and were at school, so them plus Peter is 11 minus 3 which is 8.
And was Peter an original alpha? Or did he become one when he killed Laura? And now that Derek is an alpha because he killed Peter, is the revived Peter a beta?
